SSAFA? Ready to help

Frequently Asked Questions

All backgrounds and experiences are welcomed at SSAFA. We are just looking for people who want to help others, are tolerant and open-minded. SSAFA welcome volunteers from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences.  Armed Forces experience is definitely not a requirement!

This will depend on the role and are detailed in the individual role descriptions and which we recommend that you read. However, there are some core qualities that we are looking for such as enthusiasm, having a positive attitude, being understanding and respectful.

You will be part of a team that reaches out to the Armed Forces community, past and present, and their families. SSAFA can only do this with the support of volunteers who are fundamental to delivering all of our services……..we can’t do it without you.  Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people as well as gaining new skills.

Your time and energy volunteering makes a big difference, and even if you are not directly connecting with our beneficiaries, your contribution will lead to better outcomes for those in need. Sometimes we help with the big things - such as providing financial support to help improve the living conditions of wounded veterans - but often it is simply providing a friendly face, and helping rebuild someone's self-esteem and confidence.

No, you can offer as much or as little time as you can and SSAFA recognises that you may have a full-time job or other commitments. Some roles require specific time commitments, so it is important that you read the role descriptions. We also recognise that the time you can commit to can change due to circumstances and all we ask is that you tell us of these changes.

Yes, all volunteers are required to undertake some training depending on their role. All volunteers are offered an induction which allows you an opportunity to learn more about the charity, our values and mission. You will also be offered other forms of training and development.

SSAFA’s aim is to ensure that you are ready and prepared for whichever role you decide to undertake.

Yes, you will be welcomed and supported throughout your time with SSAFA. Alongside the training that you will receive you will be given access to an information portal that has all the resources and guides you may need.

In addition there are other volunteers and SSAFA employees who are dedicated to ensuring that you have access to the correct support as and when you require it.

You will mainly volunteer in your local area, this will be either in a office (where possible) or from your own home. Some roles require you to visit beneficiaries, but they will normally be in your local area.

Yes, we strongly recommend that you claim back from SSAFA for any out of pocket expenses that you may have incurred such as mileage and any other legitimate expenses.

Yes, there maybe a couple of roles that appeal to you. All we ask is that you register your interest for each one separately, and if you decide not to follow through with either, that you let us know.

Not as quickly as that! But you can register your interest today by searching with your postcode and seeing what roles are available in your local area.

You can also get involved with SSAFA in other ways whilst your volunteer application is processed.

Why should you volunteer?

Our volunteers love what they do. The sense of pride you get when you know you’ve helped someone get their independence and dignity back is extraordinary.

Through volunteering for SSAFA, you’ll have the chance to meet some truly inspiring people, with stories you’ll never forget. You’ll also gain new skills and experiences, but most importantly, you’ll make a difference in the lives of those who have dedicated their lives, often at great sacrifice, to protect and serve our country.
