On Thursday 25 July, the Tyne and Wear branch of SSAFA marked its 50th anniversary with a drink’s reception held at the Officers’ Mess, 201 Hospital Squadron, Fenham Barracks.
Established on 1 April 1974 from the divisions of the Northumberland and Durham branches, the Tyne and Wear branch was created to serve the newly formed Metropolitan County of Tyne and Wear. It has since become the busiest branch in the Northeast and Yorkshire region.
The event was attended by fifty guests who were welcomed by a piper and a brief speech from the Branch Chairman. The Chairman highlighted the demanding workload of the branch, the vital role of SSAFA, and extended thanks to everyone for their ongoing support, with special appreciation for the Branch President.
HM Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear also spoke, acknowledging the significant contributions of SSAFA and the Tyne and Wear branch to the Armed Forces veterans’ community.
Attendees included HM Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, HM Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland, and various representatives from the metropolitan boroughs, including the Mayor of Sunderland, the Mayor of Gateshead, the Mayoress of South Tyneside, the former Lord Mayor of Newcastle, branch administrative staff, caseworkers, and long-time supporters of the branch and SSAFA.
