What is a Virtual Big Brew Up?

And how to run a successful one!

Virtual Big Brew Up

The Virtual Big Brew Up - just like the non-virtual version - seeks to bring people together over a drink and a bite to eat whilst raising awareness of and money for the Armed Forces community, particularly for those veterans and families who are struggling with the hardships of lockdown, be it isolation, disability or financial difficulty.

So the Virtual Big Brew Up allows you to support our nation's military community as well as having an excuse to have an online party with your friends and family.  Any and all donations you can raise will be gratefully received by SSAFA - but the most important part of the day is for you to have fun!

Ideas for your Virtual Big Brew Up

There are many things you can do when you’re hosting your Virtual Big Brew Up.  The following are some suggestions, but its your event so feel free to do what suits you and your friends best!

  • Host a quiz, be the ‘host with the most’ and hold a quiz for your friends and family. You can create the quiz yourself or use an online tool such as Kahoot!

  • Tell a story - challenge your friends and family to tell a story for 3 minutes using as many song or film titles as possible. Your group can vote for the best, you could be the judge or indeed just do it for fun.

  • Fancy Dress - Dress up as each other, a famous face or historical figures and put on your best impressions!

  • Games - Play classic parlour games like Charades (where you take it in turns to mime out the title of a book, film or television show) or Twenty Questions (identify a subject only answering questions with "yes" or "no").  There are also many ways to play classic board games like Risk, Monopoly or Catan online.

  • Holding a 'bake-off' - so we can't taste each other's baking efforts, but we can certainly award points for style.  And the best thing about this is that you'll have a lot of cake to eat - and something to show off on Instagram!

  • Have a Jam session - if you and your friends are musical perhaps grab your instruments or singing voice and recreate your favourite classic tunes - or even make some new ones.

How to host your Virtual Big Brew Up

There are many different mobile and PC applications you can use to host your Virtual Big Brew Up on, but here are our favourites:

  • Facebook Messenger - Facebook Messenger is a free application you can use to chat with your friends and family. It has a ton of built-in features that make communication fun and engaging.

  • Zoom - Zoom is the leader in modern enterprise video communications, with an easy, reliable cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, chat, and webinars across mobile, desktop, and room systems.  Watch out however as the free version has a 40 minute time limit.

  • Skype - Skype is for doing things together, whenever you are apart. Skype text, voice and video make it simple to share experiences with the people that matter to you, wherever they are.

  • Houseparty - Houseparty is the face-to-face social network where you can connect with the people you care about most. You can also play games together on this app.

How to raise money for SSAFA during your Virtual Big Brew Up

Every year SSAFA helps more and more people access support for financial, emotional and physical problems, and the lockdown has only made these problems worse for many people.

Please ask everyone in your Virtual Big Brew Up to make a donation, if they can, to SSAFA.  No donation is too small, and every penny helps us help our nation's military heroes.
