Sanctuary was set up more than 50 years ago and is one of the leading not-for-profit housing associations in the UK, providing housing and care to more than 250,000 people in England and Scotland.
We have a long history of supporting veterans and the Armed Forces community and do this in a variety of ways - from providing good-quality affordable housing to offering jobs, training and support for veterans as they move into civilian life.
We signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2017 and are proud to have been awarded Silver status under the Defence Employers Scheme.
We also work closely with partners in our local communities, and support veterans’ groups and charities according to their needs wherever we can.
We further strengthened our connection to the Armed Forces community in early 2024 with the acquisition of Johnnie Johnson Housing (JJH), which was founded by decorated Second World War RAF pilot James Edgar ‘Johnnie’ Johnson.
To launch our new partnership with SSAFA, we were delighted to donate £200,000, partly comprised of a legacy of £100,000 left by Johnnie Johnson himself in the event the organisation was ever acquired.
Katie Poole, Sanctuary’s Regional Director and Veterans Champion, said: “As a large housing association and care provider, we have a range of ways we can support and work with veterans.
“We’re always looking to do more, and we’re excited to be working with SSAFA to make a real difference for the Armed Forces community.”
