An inspiring zip slide event across the Clyde will take place on Friday, 13 September, raising funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, with a special participant, Stephen May.

Glasgow resident Stephen, a 14-year-old with autism and dyspraxia, has always faced significant challenges with everyday activities like walking and cycling.

His mother, Sharon May, shares his touching story: “Stephen has watched me do kiltwalks and climbs and has always wanted to join in. However, his physical limitations made it difficult for him to participate in these activities. When he saw the Zip Slide event, he said, 'Mum, I can do that one.' His excitement was overwhelming when he found out he could participate.”

Stephen's condition means that simple activities others take for granted are significant hurdles for him. Walking long distances often leads to stumbling or falling, and cycling is particularly challenging. Despite these difficulties, Stephen's determination to take part in an activity he could truly enjoy shines through.

The event holds a deep significance for Stephen's family, who have a proud military heritage. His grandad served in the Amy, spending time in Belfast and Germany before leaving the Forces. Tragically, he took his own life, highlighting the vital importance of SSAFA's support for service members and their families. Stephen's great-grandfather also served as a sergeant during World War II.

Sharon reflects on their family’s history: “We have always been proud of our military connections. SSAFA’s support is crucial, and being able to contribute to such an important cause through Stephen’s participation is incredibly meaningful for us.”
