Local Army Cadet Captain takes on Virtual Everest

22 September 2020

This Autumn, Catherine Browne had been planning a trip Nepal to trek to Everest Base Camp. Due to Covid-19 travel restrictions she has now decided to climb the only hill she has seen since March and raise money for her cadet unit and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Starting on Saturday 12th September Catherine climbed Wideford Hill (225m) in Kirkwall 40 times over 7 days; from sea-level until she has ascended the equivalent height of Everest (8848m).

Catherine Browne said: “I have been taking part in various fitness challenges over the summer to try and maintain and improve my own personal fitness during lockdown, and this idea was inspired by SSAFA's own virtual Everest challenge, but I decided to put my own spin on it and complete the total ascent within a week to make it more challenging!”

Catherine and her cadets regularly assist with fundraising for SSAFA, but unfortunately Covid-19 restrictions have prevented them this year for fundraising in their normal manner.

Catherine has surpassed her fundraising target of £500 and has raised £900. She would like to try and reach £1000. If you would like to support her, you can donate via her Gofundme page.

Please feel free to call our Forcesline if you need any support.
