Charity concert raises spirits and awareness
14 December 2022
Spectacular Hereford Cathedral, home to the Hereford Mappa Mundi, was the grand setting for a charitable concert to raise vital funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and The Samaritans.
The theme of the concert was mental health and wellbeing, with the concert being titled ‘Can You Hear Me?’ after the Bob Chilcott song of the same name.
Cantabile, the award winning girl’s choir from Hereford, performed Can You Hear Me, which has become their signature song. Although primarily aimed at those who might have a hearing impairment, the song could also refer to the silent call for help by those struggling with mental health issues.
After an exhilarating opening fanfare from Tarrington Brass, an opening speech was presented by Bargain Hunt star and local personality, Kate Bliss, followed by stirring performances from various local choirs.
The concert culminated in a phenomenal grand finale: Hand held union flags were brandished and the usual Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory, were enjoyed by all.
The fundraising target of £10,000 (£5,000 for each charity) was smashed, giving a grand total of £11,000 raised. As importantly, awareness for the charities and support available for those needing help with their mental health was highlighted in the community.
