Another successful Family Short Break!

05 November 2020

SSAFA ran it’s annual Family Break on 26 – 30 October at the Calvert Trust Exmoor. This is an adventure break is for currently serving or reservist families who have a child with an additional need and/or disability.

This is a free break for our families and an opportunity to spend quality time together, to try fun and exciting activities and to meet other families in similar situations. The break gives families a chance to get away from the home environment, to not have to think about daily life and enjoy spending quality time together. All family members get the opportunity to try activities together that challenge themselves but give them a chance to achieve and build in confidence. Peer to peer support plays a huge role for all family members as they meet others in similar situations.

This year due to social distancing measures we could only take half the centre’s capacity. Eight families attended and spent the week trying activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and canoeing.

My husband and I have worked all through lockdown with only a couple of days leave since January, and even then we were working in the evenings so this break was very much needed.  We all had a brilliant time trying new things and spending quality time together without the distraction of work and games consoles, the week really helped us to recharge our batteries and make lots of memories together.
