A day at the races raises thousands for SSAFA
23 November 2022
SSAFA enjoyed a day at the races on November 19 – and not our first.
Chepstow, on a bright and thankfully dry, late Autumn day was the venue for the event – renamed for 2022 the Chepstow Military Raceday – which, since 2014, has raised more than £190,000 for SSAFA with £20,000 raised last year alone.
Punters enjoyed not only a full racecard of excitement, but also live musical entertainment and the chance to chat with representatives of SSAFA South East Wales, formed from the recent amalgamation of three branches in the area.
Although the day’s final tally – to be shared with two other military charities – has yet to be announced, a prize auction and raffle, and a bucket collection ably assisted by soldiers of 1 RIFLES based at Beachley Barracks, will see around £2,600 going to SSAFA.
James Powell, Fundraising Co-ordinator for SSAFA’s South East Wales Branch, commented: “It has been a most successful day raising funds for a united cause,” while Helen Fergie-McGowan, Head of Network and Community Fundraising for SSAFA, noted: “Chepstow Military Raceday was such a great event. Thanks to Julian Nettlefold for supporting SSAFA and to all those who supported us on the day, including our fabulous volunteers and staff.”
