Joining Forces with Age UK

SSAFA and Age UK have teamed up to deliver a ground breaking initiative to improve the lives of veterans born before 1950, and their families and carers.

Through Joining Forces and working alongside Age UK we are reaching more people who need SSAFA’s help, people who perhaps wouldn’t have contacted SSAFA directly, and that’s a really good thing.

Known as Joining Forces, the aim of this campaign is to join up the different sources of support available to older veterans, ensuring they have the welfare and quality of life that they deserve.

Nationally, Age UK run 'Call in Time', a free telephone befriending service. Through Call in Time we match people over 60 with a volunteer to enjoy a telephone call once a week and have a friendly chat, based on common interests and the chance to share stories. As part of the Joining Forces project, we are developing particular Call in Time services tailored to veteran's needs, and would invite anyone with military experience to sign up for a one to one phone call or a group call.

An email newsletter provides bi-monthly updates, and is a valuable source of information for both veterans and their families and carers.  Please use the contact form below to get in touch and tell us how we can help you.

Local Projects:

Joining Forces has 12 local projects across England. In each of those sites, we offer face-to-face conversations with older veterans and their family or carer, to understand their personal needs. The local Age UK and SSAFA branch then work in partnership to offer follow-up support based on the Veteran's needs.

Our 12 local projects are in each of the following areas;

  • Cheshire
  • Cumbria
  • Darlington and North Yorkshire
  • Gloucestershire
  • Lancashire
  • Leicestershire and Rutland
  • Nottinghamshire
  • Portsmouth
  • Tyne and Wear
  • Wirral
  • West Midlands North
  • Worcestershire

Please note: if you are not based in these areas you are still welcome to contact the Joining Forces team using the contact form below, or use Age UK’s “Call in Time” telephone service.  Regardless of where you live, we are here to support you.

The Joining Forces Age UK service is only available to veterans of the UK's Armed Forces who were born before 1950.

Meet Tommy

Tommy, a Korean War veteran, belongs to the Joining Forces program, and enjoys the socialising opportunities it gives him.  He is also taking part in their 'Digital Storytelling' project, in collaboration with the Soldiers of Gloucester Museum.  Here he recounts his time serving in Korea, where he was also made a prisoner of war.
