Dunbartonshire branch volunteer recognised by SSAFA for exemplary support of local Armed Forces community
26 March 2025
SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has recognised Janet Marshall of Helensburgh for her dedication to helping the local Armed Forces community at its latest Scotland Regional Recognition Awards (RRA).
The biannual awards were established in 2023 to formally acknowledge extra endeavour by SSAFA volunteers, staff and external supporters across its network of 17 branches in Scotland.
Janet is one of 10 recipients of the latest RRAs, who were recognised with special SSAFA Scotland Region plaques at the charity’s Scotland Resource Committee meeting, held earlier this month at Volunteer Scotland, Jubilee House, in Stirling.
Janet has been involved with SSAFA’s Dunbartonshire branch for seven years, first as a caseworker and latterly as a fundraiser. As part of her fundraising work, she has run two annual retro-themed discos, raising over £12,000 for the branch. She was nominated for the RRA by the Dunbartonshire Branch Treasurer, who described Janet’s fundraising efforts as “relentless”, noting her organisation and clear focus on fundraising in support of SSAFA’s work as going above expectations.
Walter Gallacher, Convenor of the Scottish Resource Committee at SSAFA, commented: “The people behind SSAFA, from volunteers to supporters, are what helps us support the Armed Forces community when in need. It is always hard to choose just 10 people to recognise from the many who work tirelessly across Scotland, but I am very pleased to congratulate Janet on her award. She has gone above and beyond with her fundraising efforts, all in support of serving personnel, veterans and their families in Dunbartonshire.”
Janet added: “It is lovely to be recognised, but all my enthusiasm wouldn’t mean much without the rest of the Dunbartonshire branch team. SSAFA does a great job for the Armed Forces community, and I hope that people in Dunbartonshire know that we are here for those who need us, whenever they need help.”
SSAFA has been working for the whole UK Armed Forces community for 140 years, since 1885. Its mission is simple: to reach and embrace the Armed Forces family, so they never battle alone.
SSAFA’s Dunbartonshire branch is currently looking for a Branch Chair and Volunteer Caseworkers to support the Armed Forces community in Dunbartonshire. Anyone who may be interested in giving their time is encouraged to visit the Dunbartonshire branch website, here.
