SSAFA Cyprus ‘Dress to Express’ to open conversations around mental health

17 February 2021

On February 5, to mark the end of Children's Mental Health Week, SSAFA Cyprus’ Community Health Team 'dressed to express', sparking conversations around mental health and some great chats with young people as a result.

The ‘Dress to Express’ outfits encouraged a different way of starting a conversation and expressing emotions. This is particularly important currently as face masks are now a part of everyday life. Face masks are essential but can appear as negative in body language and limit expression. This campaign has therefore presented an opportunity to engage with younger people in a different way.

Tammy Tibbatts, CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service) Nurse Said: “Express Yourself Week for Children's Mental Health was a welcome reminder to find out who you really are and encouraged others to share this in a variety of ways.  Expressing yourself is about not being afraid to be YOU!  Embracing the differences between us all unites us whilst respecting individuality. Mental health is everyone's responsibility.  Look out for each other and reach out for support.  If you or anyone you know is having more bad days than good, let someone know. Check-in on your friends and relatives to let them know you are there. Seek support as soon as possible. There is always someone waiting to help you.  Utilise the expertise of healthcare professionals to support you on your journey.”

Jan Dowlen Gilliland, SSAFA Director Community Healthcare Operations said: Covid-19 has made the need to talk more important than ever, especially in regard to children’s mental health. We wanted to highlight this week where children can access support, but also that our Community Health services are there to support and advise parents who may be worried about their child’s mental health.”
