Shearer family to host second Ayrshire golf day in memory of veteran Gary Shearer
27 August 2024
The Shearer family from Prestwick is set to hold a second golf day in memory of the much-missed Gary, a beloved local veteran who received significant support from SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, before his passing. The event will take place on Friday, 4 October 2024, at St. Cuthbert’s Golf Club, a venue that has also recently shown its support for SSAFA.
Gary who served his country with dedication, struggled with PTSD and alcoholism after leaving the Army Despite these challenges, he remained a cherished figure in his community. In honour of Gary's memory and the support SSAFA provided during his most difficult times, his family, led by his brother Mark and daughter Jordan, organised the inaugural golf day two years ago. The event was a huge success, raising over £7,000 for SSAFA.
"After my dad passed, we wanted to do something that would give back to those who helped him and our family," said Jordan. "SSAFA was there for us when we needed them most, and this golf day is our way of saying thank you."
Following a brief hiatus last year, the Shearer family is eager to bring the event back. This year’s golf day is already nearly a sell-out, with Jordan securing raffle prizes to make the day even more memorable. The event will not only include a day of golf but will also feature evening entertainment, ensuring a full day of fun and fundraising.
St. Cuthbert’s Golf Club, the venue for the event, has been a strong supporter of SSAFA. The club recently donated £950 to SSAFA from its Armed Forces Appreciation Day, demonstrating its commitment to helping veterans and their families.
Elaine, the new chair of the SSAFA Ayrshire branch, has expressed her excitement about the upcoming event. She is eager to continue revitalising the branch and ensuring that SSAFA’s support reaches those who need it most in the local community.
